Refrigerant container color assignments assist in quickly distinguishing refrigerants within containers. However, a container color should not replace positive verification of a container''s contents from nameplates or other identifying markings. Please note that the same color may be shared by refrigerants within different refrigerant pressure classes. As currently defined in ARI Guideline N, the refrigerant pressure classes are: Class I - Low pressure refrigerants - natural boiling point is 68 F Class II - Medium pressure refrigerants - saturation pressure less than 260 psia at 104 F Class III - High pressure refrigerants - saturation pressure equal or greater than 260 psia at 104 F Class IV - Flammable refrigerants - regardless of pressure ARI Guideline N assigns colors by Pantone(R) Matching System (PMS) specifications. Descriptions of colors are only for general reference.

Containers used for storage of flammable refrigerants should also have a red colored band around its top shoulder or cap. The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute has assigned procedures to the color-coding of refrigeration chemical storage. This code allows quick identification of various refrigerants regardless of manufacturer, although other markings should be checked thoroughly before use as well. The code does not cover the colors of containers used for chemicals being recycled or recovered. Title VI Stratospheric Ozone Protection of the Clean Air Act Among other things, it established a production phase-out schedule and yearly reduction percentages for ozone-depleting chemicals. One of the primary applications of these chemicals is refrigerant for air conditioning and refrigeration equipment in buildings and supermarkets. The amendment requires recycling; bans the intentional venting or releasing of refrigerants during maintenance, service, repair, or disposal; restricts emission of refrigerants; and establishes strict control over their use.

Virgin Refrigerant - To qualify as virgin refrigerant, the material must be packaged in its original containers and still have its original factory seals. While not required, it is desirable that 30 and 50 pound cylinders be packaged in their original boxes. Reclaimed Refrigerant - To qualify as reclaimed, the refrigerant must meet ARI reclamation standards. To view ARI standards, go to our Reclaiming & Reclamation page. Most refrigerant reclaiming facilities will provide a certificate and put a reclaim seals on the containers to verify their purity. If you possess refrigerant that has been removed from a chiller system, it is highly unlikely that your refrigerant will meet these analytical parameters.
